Why do some people go out of their way to call attention to themselves?

I have seen many people do this, especially in high school. People will go out of their way to dye their hair colors like neon blue, wear clothes with studded spikes all over them and get their cheeks pierced.I imagine there are many reasons they do this, but what ideas do you have as to why they go out of their way to do this.
